Synagogue orientation - where should we face? Posted 20 February 2009
Within the last month two similar questions have come to me and I would like some help.

I understand that a Synagogue should be orientated towards Jerusalem, but whereas years ago the direction of a straight line constant bearing rhumb line on a Mercator Projection might have been good enough I would have thought that by now this should have been corrected to the direction of the shorter distance Great Circle which in the USA and Pacific areas could be very nearly at right-angles....

The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day was about standing up to hatred. It was about trying to improve how people can settle their differences, respect each other and get along, so something like World War Two will not happen again....

Seventy years ago a small group of men and women had the foresight and courage to found a Liberal synagogue in Birmingham. The building that embodied their ideals stood in Sheepcote Street until about three years ago, when, after many years of what seemed like fruitless negotiations, their successors seized the opportunity to replace it, since by then it had become somewhat run down and in need of serious repair....
